The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) was established by law in 1968 with a triple mandate as a State Broadcaster, Public Service Broadcaster, and a Commercial Broadcaster in Ghana. Headquartered in the capital city, Accra, it is funded by grants, broadcasting television commercials and the levying of a television licence, costing 36 cedis and 60 cedis for one or more TV sets in the same house every year. TV set repairers and sales outlets are to pay an annual sum of between 60 cedis to 240 cedis. History Established under an act by the British colonial government in 1935, the Gold Coast first operated a Broadcasting outlet called radio ZOY. Amin Alhassan (academic)
Amin Alhassan is a Ghanaian academic, journalist and public servant. He is the incumbent and seventeenth Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. He succeeded Kwame Akuffo Anoff-Ntow on the role on 1 October 2019. Early life and education Alhassan was born and raised in Tamale even though his parents hail from Savelugu. He had his early education at the Tishigu Anglican Primary School, and later the Tishigu Anglican Middle School in Tishigu, a suburb of Tamale. He had his secondary education at Navrongo Senior High School for his Ordinary Level Certificate (O-Level), and Tamale Senior High School for his Advanced Level Certificate (A-Level). He then proceeded to the Ghana Institute of Journalism for his tertiary education. He obtained his post graduate degrees from Concordia University and the University of Tampere. George Aryee
George Aryee is a Ghanaian public servant. He served as the Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation from 1991 to 1992. Early life and education Aryee had his secondary education at Adisadel College, Cape Coast, and later continued at Wesley College, Kumasi to train as a teacher in 1959. After his teacher training, he enrolled at the University of Cape Coast where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1969. A year later he obtained a Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) sponsored scholarship to study at the University of Ottawa, Canada, where he obtained his Master's degree in Administration. Voice of America (VOA or VoA) is the state-owned news network and international radio broadcaster of the United States of America. It is the largest and oldest U.S.-funded international broadcaster. VOA produces digital, TV, and radio content in 48 languages which it distributes to affiliate stations around the globe. It is primarily viewed by a non-American audience. GTV (Ghana)
GTV (Ghana Today Television or Ghana Today) is the national public broadcaster of Ghana, run by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. It commenced operations on July 31, 1965 and was originally known as GBC TV. GTV broadcasts mainly local programming, with over 80% of the schedule consisting of original productions. Although its main production studio is located in Accra, capital city of Ghana, it has affiliations nationwide and covers 98% of the airwaves in Ghana, making it the most powerful mode of advertisement in Ghana. Although GTV is largely funded by the Ghanaian government, it also collects annual fees from viewers. GTV currently broadcasts shows from international networks from regions such as Europe, US, UK, and Asia.
